Yugoslavia Aid trip 1999

Created by Dennis 3 years ago

I met Nikki on an aid trip to former Yugoslavia in 1999. Four of us who met up in the coach who had never met before formed an amazing bond and for the next 27 hours travelling we became lifelong friends.

Nikki was funny, smart, shy, courageous, giving, kind and a great support to the work that we did whilst with the refugees. The picture with myself Nikki and Sasha was when we met him studying at the bible centre and our church supported him through this time. Sasha took a 'shine' to Nikki but she was just a good friend.

The picture 'visiting refugees' was when we the three of us met with these lovely folk and got so engrossed in their stories that we missed the coach back to the village we were staying in. Nikki was so worried that they might make us the local yoghurt to try, which was quite an acquired taste and you guessed it they gave us some. As always not wishing to offend she ate it and managed to keep it down until we got outside and then deposited the said yoghurt at the side of the road. We never let her forget that. It was with this family that she prayed out loud for the first time and she blamed that on me as I said that when the time was right then she would have the courage to do so. it was so moving what she said that that we all had a wee cry. We had to hitch a lift back and it was pitch dark and very frightening as the locals new NATO were planning to bomb their country at any time. See what I mean by courageous.

Our little team was Dina from the Orkney isles. Philip from Glasgow and Me from Isle of Wight, although Scottish through and through.

The bridge at Novi Sad was the bridge we drove over most days to reach the refugees in the mountains. We ere the last Europeans to cross it before it was bombed by NATO. (courageous)

Nikki visited my family on the Isle and we met her in Hastings.  I will miss her more than I can say and cherish the time we all shared. She made such a difference to all she met. Nikki you were and are an angel who showed Gods Love through your actions. XX
